Kinship Awareness Week

Add to:

We are celebrating Kinship & Alternate Care Awareness Week, September 15-19, honouring the dedication of our kinship families who support children and youth when they need it most. It is also an opportunity to highlight the great work being done by our Kinship Service teams.

What is Kinship?

If a child can no longer safely remain with parents or caregivers, our first step is to determine whether there are relatives, community members, or other adults that the child has a relationship with who can care for them. This is known as a kinship arrangement. When children are placed with kin, family connections are maintained, and they remain connected to their community, culture, and religion. They have a greater sense of belonging, and the trauma of separation is significantly reduced.
