The Name Kwanzaa derives from the phrase matunda ya kwanza which means first fruit, or harvest in Swahili.
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration. It honors African heritage in African American culture, and it is observed from December 26 to January 1.
Dr. Maulana Karenga, first created Kwanza in 1966 in a response to the Watts Riots in los Angeles as a way to bring African Americans together as a community.
